How Ahlus Sunnah need to be unified in their stance toward Ahlul Bid'ah

All Praise is due to Allaah, and may the peace and blessings be upon the Messenger, his family, his companions, and those who follow them til the Day of Judgment.

[The speaker was Abu Ramlah Aadam Lazarus, a graduate of Madeenah University who compiled this lecture from Shaikh Rabee' Ibn Haadee al-Madkhalee's tape Al mawqif a sahih min ahlul bid'ah ("The Correct Position Against the People of Innovation") and from additional benefits by Shaikh Muhammad Ibn Haadee al-Madkhalee and Shaikh 'Ubaid A-Jabiree (hafidhahumullaah).]

This [topic] is necessary because the people of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah in this time seem confused on this issue. As for the people of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah, they are the people who hold fast to the Qur`an and Sunnah, with the understanding of the sahaba (companions) and [the rest of] the salaf. And as for Ahlul Bid'ah, they are those who have innovated into Islam that which is not from it - from beliefs or actions - or they choose to understand the text of the Qur`an and Sunnah with their own desire, rather than basing their understanding on the understanding of the sahaba and [the rest of] the salaf.

Amma baa'd (To proceed):

It has indeed occurred in these times that some of our Salafi brothers are mixing and associating with some of those who oppose the Salafi methodology. And you find that the least of what the brother is affected by is that he has a leaning toward those ideologies that oppose the Salafi 'Aqidah (creed), and hates or is put off when affairs of the manhaj (methodology) are mentioned to him. So he only wants to discuss general topics, and he doesn't want to be warned or to warn others against dangerous individuals or groups that oppose the Salafi methodology.

So I would like to clarify the danger of mixing and associating with these people by mentioning some proofs from the Qur`an and Sunnah, and [other] narrations from the Salaf. I will also mention some examples from history when some of Ahlus Sunnah actually turned to bid'ah because of their mixing with the people of desires.

This is a very important issue and its affair is dangerous and - due to this - the Qur`an and Sunnah and the books of the Salaf paid much focus to it, specifically regarding 'aqidah and even more specifically regarding the correct stance toward the people of bid'ah and misguidance. And in what they have clarified is sufficient for whomever wants good for himself, and to live a life that is pleasing to his Lord and to keep [him] away from the hellfire.

The Salaf (radiallaahu 'anhum), who knew the most about the 'aqidah and manhaj of the shari'ah, paid such close attention to this topic that there is nothing for us to do except to follow in their path. And this is easy for whomever Allaah wants good for.

Allaah said in the Qur`an (what means): It is He Who has sent down to you (Muhammad) the Book (this Qur`an). In it are Verses that are entirely clear; they are the foundations of the Book; and others not entirely clear. So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth), they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof, seeking Al-Fitnah (polytheism and trials, etc.), and seeking for its hidden meanings. But none knows its hidden meanings save Allaah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in it; the whole of it (clear and unclear Verses) are from our Lord." And none receive admonition except men of understanding. (Aali 'Imran, ayah 7)

So Allaah clarifies in this verse the true condition of the people of deviance and desires, and that they intend for the Muslims evil and fitnah. This is because their intentions are not correct, and their hearts are sick, and they want the people to be affected by the same poisons that are affecting them. So due to this, it is wajib (obligatory) that they are warned against to the full extent of our ability.

Verily, Allaah has informed us in this verse [7th verse of Surat Alee-'Imran] that those in whose hearts there is deviance seek those verses that are not entirely clear because they want fitnah. They want people to have fitnah in the religion, so they go astray from Allaah's true religion and end up in the same state of innovation, misguidance, doubts and confusion that those innovators themselves are in. And we ask Allaah that He saves us and them from this evil path, and saves them from those things that can cause destruction. [Ameen.]

The Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) recited this [above] verse and then said: "If you see those who seek the verses which are not entirely clear, then they are those whom Allaah has named, so beware of them."

So the people of deviance and desires seek to base their religion upon the verses that are not entirely clear. So the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) meant it is wajib to warn the people from them, because they are astray and they lead the people astray. And this is how Ahlul Bid'ah are in every time and in every place, whatever type of bid'ah [they're upon]. You should never think of a bid'ah as something small or insignificant. So ihsanu dhan, or having good thoughts, about the people of bid'ah and misguidance is in opposition to the manhaj of Allaah, The Most High. Rather it is necessary that we beware of them. So the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said, "If you see those who seek the verses which are not entirely clear, then they are the ones whom Allaah has named, so beware of them." And the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) did not say "have good thoughts about them or make excuses for them."

In these times, many of the people of desires accuse the Salafis, saying, "You all speak about people's intentions." Or if you try to criticize somebody upon bid'ah, they try to defend them by saying, "Maybe his intention is good."

But we say back to them: "Brother, if we see you have a doubt or [deviance] with you, then we should be suspicious of you because Allaah has warned us about you, and the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) has warned us about you. So how can we not warn against you? And how can we have good thoughts about you when Allaah, The Most High, has informed us of your evil intention, and the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihiwasallam) has warned us against you?

So warning against Ahlul Bid'ah, and hating them, abandoning them, and boycotting them, this is the correct way to preserve and protect the healthy ones from Ahlus Sunnah from falling into the fitnah of Ahlul Bid'ah, or having good thoughts of them. And to have an inclination toward them is the beginning of the path to misguidance and going astray, as Allaah has warned us: And do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest the fire should touch you. (Hud, ayah 113)

And who is more wrongdoing than Ahlul Bid'ah? They are more evil than the people of sin, due to this (following) fact: One of the great scholars of Basra, Salam ibn Abu Muti', said: "It would be more beloved to me to meet Allaah with the deeds of Hajjaj than with the deeds of 'Amr ibn 'Ubaid." 'Amr ibn 'Ubaid was a devout worshipper who abstained from worldly luxuries, but he was an astray innovator. As for Hajjaj, he was a tyrannical sinner responsible for the deaths of many Muslims. So this imam preferred to meet Allaah with the deeds of the oppressive sinner. And why? Because this imam realized and understood the danger and ugliness of bid'ah. And it is sufficient for us that the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) would describe bid'ah in all or most of his khutbas by saying it is sharrul umur, the worst of the affairs. And Bid'ah is also included in Allaah's statement: Or do they have partners with Allaah who have legislated for them a religion that Allaah has not ordained? (Ash-Shura, ayah 21)"

And this is the state of the followers of Ahlul Bid'ah. No matter what type of bid'ah they're upon, the meaning of these verses apply to them. And why do they apply to them? Because they [Ahlul Bid'ah] give preferences to obeying their leaders over the obedience to Allaah and His Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wasallam). And many of (Ahlul Bid'ah) will meet Allaah with this statement: Our Lord, verily we obeyed our leaders and our great ones; they misled us from the right way. Our Lord, double their torment and curse them with a mighty curse. (Al-Ahzab, ayah 68)

Many of those who will meet Allaah with this answer are those who follow their desires and fight the truth; they are pleased with falsehood and call to falsehood, like what we see among many of the people in these times, wearing the disguise of Islam and Salafiya, but they are the most severe in their battle against Salafiya and its people.

So [with regards to] the person who has respect for the manhaj of the Salaf and the 'aqidah of the Salaf, and has respect for the people of this manhaj, how can he still have good thoughts about Ahlul Bid'ah or have a leaning toward them? So we warn the Salafis against mixing with these people and following in their ways. And we should take benefit from what has happened in the past from those who were overconfident in themselves and felt that they could actually guide the people of misguidance. But the only result was that they themselves ended up being among Ahlul Bid'ah. And from these examples is 'Imran ibn Hattan, who was from Ahlus Sunnah but he had a liking for a woman from the Khawariij. He wanted to marry her and guide her to the Sunnah. He then married her, and she turned him to bid'ah. He wanted to guide her, but he went astray because of her.

Many of those who claim to be from Ahlus Sunnah say, "I'm going amongst Ahlul Bid'ah to guide them," but they just end up caught up in the ropes of Ahlul Bid'ah. So this 'Imran ibn Hattan and, also, 'Abdur-Rahman ibn Mulgim were both upon the Sunnah and then they became misguided by the ideology of the Khawariij. So 'Abdur-Rahman ibn Mulgim went on to kill 'Alee (radiallaahu 'anhu), and then 'Imran ibn Hattan, who married the Kharjii woman, went on to praise the murderer of 'Alee with lines of poetry.

And likewise, 'Abdur-Razzaq Ason'aini was from the imams of hadith, but he was deceived by the great worship and zuhd of Ja'far bin Sulaiman, so he became friendly with him and became trapped in some of the bid'ah of the Shee'ah. Also Abu Dharr Al-Harrawii, from the imams of hadith, was misled by some praise he heard about Al-Baqilanni, who was from the "scholars" of the Ash'arees, those who have many bid'ah in regards to 'aqidah. So he himself became from the callers of the Ash'aree manhaj, so much so that the Ash'aree manhaj spread throughout Morocco because of him. And prior to that time, the people of Morocco did not know anything except Salafiya, the way of Ahlus Sunnah.

And in one of the ahadith, which shows how specifically dangerous this type of situation is, you'll find the statement of the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wasallam): "Whosoever calls to guidance, then for him is the reward of all those who will act upon it, without diminishing in any way their reward. And whosoever calls to misguidance will shoulder its sin and the sins of all those who will act upon it til the Day of Judgment, without diminishing in any way their burden."

And I'll bring the example of Al-Hafidh Al-Bayhaqi, who was also misled by someone, and ended up in the manhaj of the Ash'arees regarding Allaah's Attributes.

[So after Shaikh Rabee' (hafidhahullaah) mentioned these examples, he told his listeners directly: "You are ignorant, and you have too high thoughts of yourself, and you don't have with you any knowledge to protect you, so you are hundreds of times more likely to fall into bid'ah than these [once-]great scholars we have mentioned."]

And even in this time now, there are many examples of those who were upon the manhaj as-Salafi, then mixed with Ahlul Bid'ah, then went astray. This is because Ahlul Bid'ah have many ways and methods of giving their da'wah that maybe the shayaatin of the past did not even know about. And from these new ways that they lead these people astray is that they say, "You can read any book and take and benefit from the truth contained in that book, and you just leave off the falsehood and don't accept it." But many of the youth do not know truth from falsehood, and are not able to clearly distinguish between the two.

So that reader or even someone listening to a lecture accepts the falsehood, thinking it is truth. And he rejects the truth, because he thinks it's falsehood, and thus the affairs become confusing to him. And this is just as the companion of the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wasallam), Hudhaifa bin Al Yaman (radiallaahu 'anhu), said: "Verily misguidance - all of misguidance - is that you reject what you used to approve of, and you approve of what you used to reject."

So we see this now among the Salafis. You don't even realize until a weak one of them turns and starts to do battle against Ahlus Sunnah. In his view, this evil seems to be something good, and what the Salafis are upon looks to be something evil. So this is misguidance - all of misguidance. So we warn the Salafis from being deceived by Ahlul Bid'ah, or from being inclined toward them.

So the Shaikh (hafidhahullaah) continued, "So I advise the Salafis to sit with and take knowledge from the good people, and that they beware of those who are evil, for verily the noble Messenger of Allaah (salalaahu 'alaihi wasallam) presented a great example of the evil effects of having a bad companion, and the good effects of having a good companion. In his statement (salalaahu 'alaihi wasallam): "The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like that of a misk (perfume) salesman and a blacksmith. So the perfume salesman will either give you some of his perfume or he will sell you some of it, or at least you will smell his beautiful scent. As for the evil companion, then he is like the blacksmith who will either burn your clothes or you won't escape from his smoke."

So with the good companion, you are a winner, and you will always benefit and you will not find from him except good. And as for the bad companion, then he will bring harm to you, whether big or small. Some type of [his] evil will affect you. So if this is the case with bad companionship, then why do you strive to mix with them and sit with them? What proof do you have to claim it is permissible? If you claim the Qur`an is a proof, then [know] the Qur`an is a proof against you. If you claim the Sunnah is a proof, then [know] the Sunnah is a proof against you.

The Prophet (salalaahu 'alaihi wasallam) warned and clarified the great danger of having a bad companion. So what is your excuse? The imams of Islam warned and spread the guidance of the Qur`an and Sunnah in their books. With what proof do you oppose the methodology of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah, and threaten your brothers who want good for you, and fear you may fall into evil?

So the shaikh continued by saying, "So I advise the Salafis wherever they are to study the manhaj of the Salaf, and to come to know the greatness of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah. And to truly realize that they are the people of advice and experience. And to realize that the majority of those who have opposed them have fallen into falsehood and evil. And whoever benefits from them is safe, and succeeds. And there is nothing that equals safety and success.

And if it was that the great ones from the Salaf, such as Ayyub as-Sakhtiani and Ibn Sireen and Mujahid and other than them (rahimahumullaah), would not tolerate to listen to a word or even half a word from the people of falsehood, then they would not give you permission to debate with Ahlul Bid'ah, because debating with them would land you in fitnah and confusion. [And] those scholars were the people of experience and intelligence and advice."

So the Shaikh Rabee' continued by advising that we benefit from three things: 1- the book of Allaah, 2- the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (salalaahu 'alaihi wasallam), and 3- the guidance and the stances taken by the Salaf us-salih, beginning with the sahaba, because they were the best of generations. At the head of them [from the examples we will share here today] are: 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, 'Alee ibn Abi Talib, 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas, Jaabir ibn 'Abdullah, and 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (radiallaahu 'anhum).

As for 'Umar bin al-Khattab, then his story involving Sabeegh bin 'Asl is famous. Sabeegh was spreading doubts among the people regarding certain verses from the Qur`an. So 'Umar had him brought in so that he could hit him and put him in prison. Then 'Umar brought Sabeegh again, hit him, and sent him back to prison. And then, on the third time, Sabeegh said, "O leader of the believers. If you want to kill me, then do it in a good way, and if you wanted to remove that which was in my head [evil], then by Allaah, they have left."

But 'Umar never felt completely safe with him, so after everything that happened, Sabeegh was exiled to 'Iraq, and it was ordered that he be abandoned. So this was the punishment for those doubts and confusion he was spreading amongst the people. Now, if you compare [that bid'ah] with people upon the least amount of bid'ah of our time, you will see the misguidance of the late comers is extremely worse and more dangerous, due to their many callers and many da'wah activities.

As for 'Alee ibn Abi Talib (radiallaahu 'anhu), then it is sufficient - as a stance against Ahlul Bid'ah - that he waged war against the Khawariij, those whom the Messenger of Allaah (salalaahu 'alaihi wasallam) described as "the worst of those under the sky." And in these times, the Khawariij have once again come out with terrible harshness and severity, and they have so many ways to threaten, destroy, and murder that only Allaah knows about and can protect us from their evil. And so how can any Muslim, who is truthful to those he loves, be friendly with these terrorists or protect them? How can a Muslim give any trust to someone with this type of ideology?

And likewise, Ibn 'Umar, when he was informed of those who deny Allaah's Qadr, said: "Inform them, I am free from them and they are free from me." So the Salaf have understood from the text of the Qur`an and Sunnah the correct and safe stance toward the people of bid'ah and misguidance, and they have compiled that in their books. And they have said that there is no harm in backbiting an innovator to warn the people from him, as it is wajib to warn against him. Ahlul Bid'ah are worse and more dangerous than any other evildoers, because they corrupt the religion of Allaah directly.

A sinner is not as dangerous because he admits he is astray and that what he's doing is not from Islam, and he intends to repent for what he's doing wrong. As for an innovator, he corrupts the religion and he corrupts the people, and he rarely repents from bid'ah, because he has made his bid'ah part of his religion. It is due to this difference between the innovator and the sinner that Allaah, The Most High, dispraised and refuted the evil scholars from the previous nations more than He dispraised the evil, oppressive rulers of those nations. And that was because the corruption of those rulers was known and apparent to the people. But as for those evil scholars, they used to hide the truth with falsehood, like Allaah, The Most High, said in the Qur'an: Why do you cover the truth with falsehood and you hide the truth while you know it? (Alee-'Imran, ayah 71)

And this is the state and condition of Ahlul Bid'ah, that they hide the truth. Their other deceptive path is they have something from misguidance and they mix it with something from the truth, so they can spread it without the people realizing that there is falsehood mixed in with the truth. So you see in the Qur`an how much blaming, and warning against, and refuting [there is against] those misguided scholars of those previous nations. Why? Because they are those ones who corrupted Allaah's religion, and Ahlul Bid'ah are upon the same affair. And they also have a share of the blame that Allaah mentioned regarding those previous nations. And the proof for this is the statement of Allaah's Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam), "Indeed, you shall follow in the ways of those who came before you, imitating them exactly. Even if they were to enter a lizard's hole, you would enter it also."

So Ahlul Bid'ah have fallen into this evil, and have followed the previous nations in regards to altering the meanings of text, and lying and spreading falsehood. So there is a great similarity between Ahlul Bid'ah and those people. And the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) had already informed us that they would follow them.

So then Shaikh Rabee' (hafidhahullaah) concluded by saying, "After all we have mentioned, we advise the Salafis to turn toward seeking beneficial knowledge and strive toward accompanying only the righteous while abandoning the people of bid'ah, doubts and fitnah. And may Allaah benefit us, and make us from those who implement obedience to Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihiwasallam) and following him in every aspect of our lives. Verily, Allaah is the Hearer of supplications, and may Allaah's peace and blessings be upon Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alaihiwasallam), and his family and companions.

Now that we have finished this beautiful speech of Shaikh Rabee' (hafidhahullaah), I would like to mention and conclude the sitting with a few extra benefits regarding some related issues.

So firstly, Shaikh Muhammad ibn Haadee al-Madkhalee (hafidhahullaah) has explained the correct methodology of doing hajr (boycotting), and this involves how to correctly weigh up the benefits and harms that would result from the hajr, and how the hajr would affect both the person doing the hajr and the one being abandoned and boycotted.

For those who don't know, hajr is abandonment or boycotting in Islam, for which there are many different situations and rulings that apply to situations. But what we're dealing with now is hajr or abandonment of Ahlul Bid'ah. So the shaikh clarified this, because many people don't clearly differentiate between the types of hajr, as it relates to sins and bid'ah.

As for the sinner from Ahlus Sunnah, then he is the one at whose first affair we must look and judge whether or not hajr will benefit him. So hajr is recommended if we feel the sinner will become upright and leave his sins. But if we feel that abandoning the sinner will drive him further astray, then we should not abandon him - unless we fear that his sins will bring a greater evil unto us. Again, this is all in the case of a sinner from Ahlus Sunnah.

And as for someone from Ahlul Bid'ah, then our main concern is about protecting our own selves and our religion from his evil. And if he benefits from this hajr, then that's good. But our main concern is to protect ourselves. So it is by ijma', or consensus of agreement by the Salaf, that people of bid'ah are to be boycotted forever until they repent. So this agreement of the Salaf has been clearly narrated by Imam Al-Baghawee in his tremendous book Sharh Us-Sunnah and other than him from the imams of Islam.

So know that if someone claims, generally, that we must take into consideration whether the person [of bid'ah] we are considering boycotting will benefit, then this is wrong. This is not the way of the Salaf. And the only exception regarding the boycotting of Ahlul Bid'ah is [if] they are in a state of power, and the people of the Sunnah fear that even more harm would come upon themselves if they were to abandon this person. So in this, it is permissible to not do the hajr. As for other times, then it is not as some people claim that it is only if you fear for yourself, then it is permissible to do hajr. Rather we say: it's obligatory to make hajr of Ahlul Bid'ah.

The noble Shaikh Muhammad ibn Haadee al-Madkhalee (hafidhahullaah) has also brought clarity to many issues relating to warning against those who oppose the Sunnah.

So he has refuted the claims that are common among many people in our times. And from those doubts that are heard in these times is that a refutation upon someone who opposes the Sunnah must come from a scholar whose foot is firmly embedded in the field of knowledge. And the shaikh (hafidhahullaah) has explained this condition is not correct. Rather, as long as the Salafi doing the refutation has sound knowledge of that issue, then it is not necessary that he be from the scholars.

Another claim that people make in these times is that refutations should not be spread in the lands, where the people are not familiar with that specific bid'ah being refuted. These people even go as far as saying the refutation should not be spread among the group of unknowing people, even if they are in the same land or locality as that bid'ah. So shaikh Muhammad ibn Haadee al-Madkhalee (hafidhahullaah) refutes this doubt by saying, "How can you know whether some of the people have heard about this bid'ah before?" So there is always a chance that some people have already been affected, even if it's not apparent.

Also, warning the people before the harm comes to them is better and more beneficial, because it's a protection and fortress for them - rather than waiting until after the bid'ah enters their heart, because then it could be too late.

Also, we find the books of the Salaf full of the mention of specific bid'ah, along with the refutations of them. Another claim people make these days is that if someone who opposes the Salafis repents, and returns back to the way of Ahlus Sunnah, that it is not permissible to speak about him.

So Shaikh Muhammad ibn Haadee al-Madkhalee (hafidhahullaah) clarified this doubt by saying, "If the person's mistakes were written or recorded or if there are people who still don't know that he repented, then we must continue to refute his mistakes, even after his death." And this is due to the possibility of his old speech falling into the hands of the people.

A clear example was when Ibn 'Aqeel, from the Mu'tazila (a deviant group that has many innovations regarding 'aqidah), repented from his bid'ah of being upon the Mu'tazila 'aqidah and returned back to Ahlus Sunnah. But even after his repentance, Ibn Qudama Al Maqdasi (rahimahullaah) - a great Salafi scholar of his time - wrote a whole book explaining Ibn 'Aqeel's repentance and refuting all [Ibn 'Aqeel's] mistakes from his other books. So we see Imam Ibn Qudama Al Maqdasi still wrote an entire book, refuting Ibn 'Aqeel, even after he repented from his bid'ah of i'tizal.

Also, when someone is known to have had mistakes, then we should not be hasty and quick to push him in front of the da'wa. Rather, we should wait and watch him to see if his speech and actions actually prove his claim of repentance.

And a clear example of this was regarding Abu Hassan Al-Ash'aree (rahimahullaah), who was known for innovations in 'aqidah. He eventually claimed that he repented from his bid'ah to return to the way of the Sunnah. However, Imam Barbaharee and other than him did not accept this from Abu Hassan Al'Ash'aree. So we find that the imams of his time did not praise him and did not advise the people to benefit from him. Even the book, which he (Abu Hassan Al'Ash'aree) wrote to clarify his repentance never became widespread amongst the people until after his death. And this truly shows us how careful the Salaf were in dealing with this type of individual.

And may Allaah's peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and all his companions.

Shaikh al-Anjaaree: Make Sure Islaam is not Attacked from Your Direction!

What follows are excerpts and paraphrased benefits of a lecture delivered by Abu Uwais (rahimahullaah), from a CD titled "Deception."

Abu Uwais (rahimahullaah) relayed that Shaikh Abu 'Uthmaan Muhammaad Al-Anjaaree (hafidhahullaah) - while the shaikh from Kuwait was in America, specifically in Masjid Rahmah nine years ago - said:

"Each of us is on an area on the battlefield to protect Islaam. Make sure Islaam is not attacked from your direction."

Abu Uwais explained: "...Don't let Islaam be attacked from your way. Don't let Islaam be attacked from your way. This is very important to understand what [the shaikh's] statement was. This is very serious! Akhee, you're on a post and position, and I'm on a post and position. Akhee, you have a responsibility and I have a responsibility. You have a duty, and I have a duty. If we are derelict in that duty, negligent in that duty - (if we) do not do it correctly - then Islaam is attacked from our angle. And we have harmed the Muslims. We have harmed the Muslims, particularly if you give the innovator the ability to speak. And you allow him to do so. You have given the position to the enemy.

For the quloob (hearts) are between the fingers of Ar-Rahmaan (The Most Merciful). He turns them as He wills. But if you allow the mubtadi' (innovator) to have the ability to speak to the laymen - the common folk, the people who don't possess much clarity - (then) you fall into that narration (athar), even if it is just a portion of it. [The statement of Al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyaad (rahimahullaah):] "Whoever honors an innovator has assisted in the demolition of Islaam." *

You may not feel that due to the absence of knowledge, hardness of hearts - many reasons - just like the Christians don't feel all that bad when they're committing Shirk (polytheism). And the Muslim feels it at the bottom of his heart, that, 'hey, this is off. What did he just say about Allaah? Majnoon hadha (crazy is this person who made that erroneous statement about Allaah)!"

Also on that same CD - titled "Deception" - Abu Uwais said the he and the congregation at Masjid Rahmah went over this important matter concerning boycotting the people of Bid'ah and its implementation many, many times. This can be found in the "exorbant amount of tapes." If this knowledge that you have is not implemented, then that knowledge you have is just "theoretical." If you see an innovator in front of you, then all those ayat and ahadeeth and athaar concerning them are to be implemented (such that you don't sit with them, you don't read their books, you don't listen to their tapes, you don't open their emails and you don't praise them and you definitely don't give him the microphone. In fact, plugging your ears if his words were to pass all those barriers and reach you.)

And that segues into the reason for that day's talk. Innovator Abu Usamah Adh-Dhahabi attempted to deceive Abu Uwais by approaching him so that he (Adh-Dhahabi) could make bayaan, and clarify matters via Abu Uwais or Masjid Rahmah.

Allaah gave Abu Uwais tawfeeq (success) to reject the deception, and say that if Dhahabi was truthful in his claim, he had to take matters up with the 'ulemma who refuted him. There was a reason the 'ulemma made tabdee' of him [for his errors in 'aqeedah/manhaj] and it is upon him to take up those matters with the 'ulemma. [He needed to make tawba (repent) between him and Allaah, and then openly declare the truth which he concealed.] As far as going to Masjid Rahmah, this is deception.

Abu Uwais said: "There's a proper way for a mubtadi' (innovator) to make tawbah. And we have stated regarding this individual Abu Usamah Adh-Dhahabi, who for the last week or two has had this zeal to try to make tawbah as he states it, and do so by connecting himself to Abu Uwais or Masjid Rahmah. (Many times) we have sent them a message, because we don't sit or speak with these people (of bid'ah). That all you have to do - your issue is with the scholars, so go to the scholars. It doesn't benefit me to go to Zaid or Amr, if my problem is with Shaikh Rabee' bin Haadee (al-Madkhalee, hafidhahullaah). What does it benefit me to go to Moosa or Mahmoud, if my problem is (with Shaikh) Ahmad an-Najmee (who has since died, rahimahullaah), or Zayd al-Madkhalee (hafidhahullaah)? What does it benefit me to go to someone else? This is not the way or proper procedure to address the issue.

It's not the proper procedure to address the issue in that manner. You don't go to a laymen or a student of knowledge or students, and say, 'clarify my situation.' No!"

[Abu Uwais here and later referred to books that dealt with the correct methodology in referring matters - especially matters of tabdee' and takfeer - to the major scholars.]

"Shaikh Ahmad An-Najmee [rahimahullaah] said about Abu Usamah Adh-Dhahabi: He is an innovator. Stay away from him! ..."

"You have to be foolish min ajhal an-naas (from amongst the most ignorant of people) or an individual of trickery and Makr, plotting and planning, to take it to other than them! It makes no sense whatsoever!

That you have writing (books) and tapes, cassette tape recordings, and you saw what the shaikh said about you or heard what the shaikh said, and you just go away from there and never deal with that issue, but you come to Newark, New Jersey, to a masjid that sits over a chicken hut, talking about, you want some clarity. No! You want some games. If you wanted clarity, you would go to those individuals you have to clear things up with. The scholars made the hukum on you.

When the Qadariyah (those who deny the Qadr) appeared in the time of Yahya al-Basari and Humair ibn 'Abdur-Rahman al-Basari, and the Qadariyah had mukhalafat (oppositions to the Qur`an and Sunnah), which would lead to their departure from Ahlus-Sunnah wal Jama'ah. Yahya bin Ya'mur al-Basri and Humaid ibn 'Abdur-Rahman al-Basri were not quick in giving a ruling in this matter, but rather they went to those who were the source of knowledge from the people of knowledge and fataawa`. And that was 'Abdullaah ibn 'Umar al-Khattab (radiallaahu 'anhumma). So they informed him of what happened, and he gave them a fatwa regarding the misguidance of the Qadariyah.

[FIRST HADEETH OF SAHEEH MUSLIM: It is narrated on the authority of Yahya bin Ya'mur that the first man who discussed about Qadr (Divine Decree) in Basra was Ma'bad al-Juhani. I along with Humaid bin 'Abdur-Rahman Himyari set out for prilgrimage or for 'Umrah and said: Should it so happen that we come into contact with one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) we shall ask him about what is talked about Taqdir (Division Decree). Unintentionally, we came across 'Abdullaah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab, while he was entering the mosque. My companion and I surrounded him. One of us (stood) on his right and the other stood on his left. I expected that my companion would authorize me to speak. I therefore said: Abu 'Abdur Rahman! There have appeared some people in our land who recite the Qur`an and pursue knowledge. And then after talking about their affairs, added: They (such people) claim that there is no such thing as Divine Decree and events are not predestined. He ('Abdullah ibn 'Umar) said: When you happen to meet such people, tell them that I have nothing to do with them and they have nothing to do with me. And verily they are in no way responsible for my (belief). Abdullah ibn Umar swore by Him (the Lord) (and said): If any one of them (who does not believe in the Divine Decree) had with him gold equal to the bulk of (the mountain) Uhud and then gave it (in the way of Allaah), Allaah would not accept it unless he affirmed his faith in Divine Decree...]

And the narration of Zubeed bin Harith al-Yani. When the Murji'ah came out in his time, he saw all the types of mukhalafat (opposition to the Qur`an and Sunnah) they had, so he didn't rush the matter. He sought out one of the kibaar as-Sahaabah whom fatwa could be asked from - Abu Wa`il Shaqiq at-Toofi, who showed him from the text that the murji'ah are upon baatil and are astray."

Abu Uwais said: "And I say this: Tomorrow, someone may come here and you must know that it is forbidden (haram) to give someone of that nature (upon innovation) the microphone. And you must know that it was forbidden for any of the brothers to sit here and listen (to Abu Usama Adh-Dhahabi or any Innovator). I see them as sinful, and they should make tawbah from it. I didn't say make a bayaan. There's a difference. People are going bayaan-crazy these days. Everybody, even the Pizza man has to write a bayaan. Nobody is listening to him anyway, and he has to write a bayaan? To allow yourself to listen to the words of a mubtadi' (innovator) is wrong under any circumstances. And no one can say, 'the Administration allowed this.'

The Administration did not allow this. If one individual allows it, it does not mean the Administration allows it. That's what I heard one brother say, 'The Administration allowed it.'

But know this: that no one is above reproach and no one is above making mistakes. And if a day comes - and may Allaah protect us from it - that the Administration [of Masjid Rahmah] lets a mubtadi' (Innovator) speak, you're supposed to sit here and listen? Akhee (at what point) are we going to practice (start implementing) this manhaj?"

[Then Abu Uwais talked about the wrong attitude most have regarding manhaj, feeling secure, putting their guard down, failing to implement this manhaj when the mubtadi' (innovator) is right in front of you, allowing emotionalism to getting in the way of applying the text in this regard. Abu Uwais said we should be strong and have resolve.]

Abu Uwais said: "You study Ahlul-Bid'ah all day long from a book, and when they are physically in front of you, you don't know what to do? Brother, that means your knowledge is theoretical. It's just data, man, and it a'int got nottin to do with your real life, reality. You are dislocated, you are disconnected. What's the benefit of studying if you are not going to act upon it? What's the benefit of it? Is it just writing something or hearing something just to pass the time? I certainly didn't intend that..."

"I've said it a hundred times, and I'll say it again. Many of our brothers [at Masjid Rahmah] think the only Innovator is Abu Muslimah (The Liar)."

"For the same reason you don't hug Abu Muslima, you shouldn't hug Abu Usamah Adh-Dhahabi. Why in your mind is there a difference? I'm really sorry I have to waste my breathe about this madness after we studied what we studied. Unfortunately, the people look at us in a manner that we don't deserve to be looked at. They say, 'oh, maa sha` Allaah, them brothers have IlmOnline going on, all the mashayikh call, they have this shaikh on this day and that shaikh on that day, and they connect with this shaikh and connect with that shaikh. And they're doing this and doing that.' Brother, we're not doing anything. And I'm a witness. Not doing anything.

But when everybody is moving like tortoises, then the guy who is just a little bit faster looks better. 'He got past the turtle.' Looks better. But don't get in a state of ghuroor (delusion); don't get filled up with yourself. Don't get astonished with yourself. Don't allow your head to get big. Don't start to believe the hype. Because you will destroy yourself."

"I would have thought that out of a million things that could have been ingrained, that one there should have been a staple: DON'T TALK TO INNOVATORS! How many times did we talk about it?"

"There maybe some fools out there - in particular, this fool Abu Usamah Adh-Dhahabi - who may have believed that if he connects himself with the name of Masjid Rahmah or this brother or that brother, that this would have given him some clarity. No! This is not the case."

"I asked Shaikh Anjaaree about this type. I told him because he knows Abu Usamah Adh-Dhahabi. [If Abu Usamah comes and wants to sit] what should be the mawqif in this case?

He said: 'The mawqif in this case is you don't sit with him. And if you are stuck, forced, you say to him: 'We're upon clarity, you're not upon clarity. Go back until you get some clarity.'

And these people, their tawbah must be clear and their bayaan must be clear. [It has to be] taken back to Ahlul 'Ilm and accepted there."

Also, on that CD, Abu Uwais said Masjid Rahmah has a policy of not giving the Microphone to (anyone who falls into any one of these three categories):

1- An Innovator (has incorrect 'aqeedah/Manhaj)
2- Doesn't have Knowledge
3- Makes too many mistakes (such as confusing an ayah with a hadeeth), even if he may be righteous

Abu Uwais also said: "Akhee, understand that whatever comes out over this microphone from myself or anyone else, it has to be:
1- Allaah said.
2- His Messenger (salallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said.
3- The Companions said.

It has to be Manhaj as-Salafee. We are not into personalities." **

Notes:

* The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "Whoever innovates or accommodates an innovator, then upon him is the curse of Allaah, His Angels and the whole of mankind." [Reported by Bukhaaree, 12/41 and Muslim, 9/140] The curse of Allaah is upon the one who is pleased with the bid'ah or the one who defends the bid'ah, as mentioned by As-Suyooti in his comments of the Sunnan of Imam An-Nasa`ee.

** Abu Uwais (rahimahullaah) taught the importance of loyalty to Allaah and not in opposition to Allaah. Student Abu Yusuf Khaleefah relayed that Abu Uwais (rahimahullaah) said concerning this matter: "If the 'ulemma refute me, then leave me. I won't be here (behind the microphone) anymore." So not only is Abu Uwais free of the actions of the Administration of Masjid Rahmah, but his talks back then, maa sha` Allaah, refute clearly the actions of the Administration of Masjid Rahmah today. This shows they are not implementing what they learned.

Troid Overthrow activists now promoting Tariq Ramadahn

The remnants of the failed overthrow plot who's antics caused the temporary closure of Masjid al Furqaan (troid da'wah centre) and took what was to many a lighthouse of guidance (troid website) offline for a short time last year here in Toronto have now turned to promoting the refuted individual Tariq Ramadahn.

Above is a screenshot taken feb 14 2012 from their garbage website they had used when they hijacked the troid.org domain last year.

Is this the direction they had planned for Troid had their overthrow plots been successful?

May Allah Protect this noble Da'wah and those who adhere to it from the likes of these power hungry promoters of falsehood and misguidance, ameen.

The Virtues of The Scholars

Allaah, The Most High, said (what means): It is only the 'Ulemma among His slaves who fear Allaah... (Fatir, ayah 28) The people of knowledge explain that this fear is a complete fear, meaning as He (Allaah) should be feared.

Allaah said (what means): ...Allaah will exalt in degree those of you who believe, and those who have been granted knowledge. And Allaah is Well-Acquainted with what you do. (Al-Mujadilah, ayah 11)

Abu Darda (radiallaahu 'anhu) said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) say: Whoever follows a path to seek knowledge, Allaah will show him the way to Paradise. The angels lower their wings being pleased with the one who seeks knowledge. Whoever is in the heavens and on earth, even the fish in the sea, ask for forgiveness for the scholar. The superiority of the scholar over the worshipper is like that of the moon over all other heavenly bodies. The scholars are the heirs of the Prophets, for the Prophets did not leave behind Dinars and Dirhams, but they left behind knowledge; and whoever receives it, receives an abundance of good fortune. (Ahmad, Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah)

The Virtues of Shaikh Rabee' bin Hadee al-Madkhalee (hafidhahullaah)

Shaikh Ahmad Bazmool (hafidhahullaah) said: "For the one to make a statement against Shaikh Rabee' [bin Hadee al-Madkhalee] is foolishness. Rather, if anyone makes a statement against Shaikh Rabee' [then] he has removed himself from Salafiyyah in totality...

Just like the people used to say in the time of Imam Ahmad, who was a man known as Imaam of Ahlus-Sunnah... if one made a statement against him, he was looked at as not being one of the people of the Sunnah [but] as being one of the people of desires...

Was it because Imam Ahmad was seen to be the Sunnah himself? No, of course not! But he (Imam Ahmad) was looked at as one who was a carrier of the Sunnah... He was looked (at) as someone who was a defender of the Sunnah.

So when we find the likes of so and so saying something against Shaikh Rabee', then the case is the same as someone saying something against Imam Ahmad. When asked about his students, Shaikh Muhammad 'Abdul-Wahhab Marzooq al-Banna (rahimahullaah) said: "Shaikh Rabee' ibn Hadee al-Madkhalee, the best of them..."

In the footnote under this is the following:

Shaikh Muhammad al-Banna used to say that Shaikh Rabee' ibn Hadee was the Imam Yahyah Ibn Ma'een of this era, meaning he was the one to refer to regarding the affairs of knowing the innovators and their misguidance. Shaikh 'Abdul-'Aziz Bin Baaz (rahimahullaah) would write to Shaikh Rabee' asking him concerning the affairs of individuals. Shaikh Muhammad al-Banna had so much love and respect for Shaikh Rabee', and would invite him to his house in Makkah regularly for dinner and would say, "I used to be Shaikh Rabee's teacher, but now Shaikh Rabee' is my teacher."

And Shaikh Muhammad al-Banna (rahimahullaah) also said: "Who is in this time similar to him? He knows the reality of most of the callers. Who is like him? He knows with proof and evidence. He doesn't speak about anyone except with the proof. That is why I say about Rabee' Haadee is similar to Yahyah ibn Ma'een in this time. You must forgive me, son, I have become old. I forget, now I am 90 years (old). Shaikh Ibn Baz - rahimahullaah - is the 'Umar ibn 'Abdul-Aziz of this era. And Shaikh Nasrud-Deen al-Albaani - rahimahullaah - is the Ibn Taymiyyah of this era, and Shaikh 'Uthaimeen - rahimahullaah - is the Shafi'ee of this era.

By Allaah, the most knowledgeable of our scholars in this time (is) Ibn 'Uthaimeen, rahimahullaah, and the most generous is Shaikh 'Abdul-Aziz ibn Baz - rahimahullaah - and the most knowledgeable of those differences between people and knowing the truth is Shaikh al-Albaani, rahimahullaah, and the most knowledgeable ones of Rijaal (men) with proof and evidence is Shaikh Rabee' Haadee. May Allaah protect him. And May Allaah protect his intellect.

When Shaikh al-Albaani, rahimahullaah, showed the errors of Sayid Qutb, and 'Abdullah Dawaish rahimahullaah [also showed the errors of Sayid Qutb], no one moved. But when Shaikh Rabee', may Allaah be pleased with him, showed the misguidance of Sayid Qutb and he clarified it from his (Sayid Qutb's) books and his situation in the past, the world was against Rabee'. He said it with openness and evidence. So may Allaah reward him and make him firm and may Allaah keep him alive to remove those who wear the clothes of Salafiyyah in order to fight it. We ask Allaah to show their state and clarify them, and keep their evil away from us."

Shaikh Muqbil (rahimahullaah) said concerning Shaikh Rabee' bin Hadee (hafidhahullaah): "...from amongst the individuals who are very knowledgeable about parties and groups during present times is the brother Rabee'a bin Hadee al-Madhkalee (hafidhahullaah). The person who Rabee'a informs is a hizbee, his affair will eventually become apparent and exposed after some time, and you will remember (that Shaikh Rabee'a warned of him).

A person's affair initially is unknown and that individual doesn't want to expose himself, but if he becomes more popular and gains a following and he no longer is worried about what is said concerning him, he exposes what he holds (his true beliefs and methodology)."

Shaykh Zayd al-Madkhalee - may Allaah aid him - said: The refutations that Shaikh Rabee' has taken on the task of carrying out are striving and fighting to make the truth uppermost. They are also an advice and concern for Muslims, especially beginning students of knowledge and those similar to them who are not meticulous in the field of creed (al-'aqeedah), methodology (al-manhaj) and refutations. His efforts deter the beginning students and those similar to them from falling into perils and cautionary matters.

Shaykh 'Abdul-'Azeez bin Baaz [d. 1420 AH, rahimahullaah] said: "Shaykh Rabee' is well-known to me to have knowledge, virtue and the correct creed."

Question to Shaikh al-'Uthaimeen (rahimahullah): What is your advice concerning the one who forbids the cassettes of Shaikh Rabee' bin Haadee [from being distributed] with the claim that they cause fitnah and that they contain praise of the Wullaat ul-Umoor of the Kingdom, and that his praise of them emanates from nifaaq (hypocrisy)?

Answer from Shaikh al-'Uthaimeen (rahimahullah): "We consider this to be a great error and mistake. Shaikh Rabee' is from the 'Ulamaa of the Sunnah, and from the people of goodness. His 'aqidah is sound and his manhaj is strong and sound. However, when he began to speak about some of the symbolic figureheads of some of the people, from amongst the latecomers they began to tarnish him with these faults. Do you know [this] now?"

A Warning against Attacking, Belittling the Scholars; Do Not Be Deceived: Those who find fault with the scholars of Tawheed - the scholars of the Sunnah - are the people of plotting and deceit

Student of knowledge Abu Uwais read from the work of Shaykh Sultan ibn 'Abdur-Rahman Al-'Eid (rahimahumullaah), and from that beneficial lesson were the following statements:

Hafidh Ibn As-Saakir (rahimahullaah) said: The flesh of the scholar is poison...and Allaah (exposing) removing the cover from the one who belittles the scholar, this is well known. And talking about them in a manner in which they are innocent is a tremendous (horrendous) affair. And to eat of their honor with lies is a matter that is shameful. It is known that Allaah causes the heart (of the one who does this) to die before their body dies.

And they only harm themselves, and they acquire humiliation, because Truly, Allaah defends those who believe. (Al-Hajj, ayah 38) And Verily, Allaah does not set right the work of Al-Mufsidoon (the evil-doers, corrupts, etc.). (Yunus, ayah 81)

Those who find fault with the scholars of Tawheed - the scholars of the Sunnah - are the people of plotting and deceit. If they are not able to say directly (out loud) what they want to say, they will say it indirectly. So pay attention to this, ya 'ibadullaah, so you will not be deceived."

Imam Ibn Mubarak (rahimahullaah) said: He who belittles the scholars, he will lose his hereafter.

Imam Ahmad (rahimahullaah) said: The flesh of the scholars is poisonous (to eat [by slandering]).

Imaam Ahmad (d. 241H, rahimahullaah) said: "Whoever speaks ill of the (righteous) scholars, Allaah will give death to that person's heart before He will give death to that person."

Shaikh Zayd al-Madkhalee (hafidhahullaah) said: "...The one who belittles the righteous scholars, criticizes them, and describes them with that which they are free from, then he has been afflicted with the disease of doubt and the disease of lust. And the distinguishing sign of the people of bid'ah was that they would find fault with the righteous scholars..."

Furthermore, Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan (hafidhahullaah) said there is a purpose to deviants slandering scholars.

"...There are people who have renounced the study of 'Aqeedah and they have renounced the books of the Salaf (Prophet Muhammad and his companions, and second and third generations) and they have renounced the writings of the Imams of Islam. And they want to direct the people to their own writings and to their likes from the juhaal (ignoramusus) and the du'aat-u-dalaal (callers to misguidance)."

Oh Stranger: Stand Firm!

Allaah, Subhanahu wa Ta'aala, said:

فَلَوْلاَ كَانَ مِنَ الْقُرُونِ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ أُوْلُوا بَقِيَّة يَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْفَسَادِ فِي الأَرْضِ إِلاَّ قَلِيلا مِمَّنْ أَنْجَيْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَاتَّبَعَ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مَا أُتْرِفُوا فِيه وَكَانُوا مُجْرِمِينَ

If only there had been among the generations before you, persons having wisdom, prohibiting (others) from Al-Fasaad (disbelief, polytheism, and all kinds of crimes and sins) in the earth, except a few of those whom We saved from among them. Those who did wrong pursued the enjoyment of good things of (this worldly) life, and were Mujrimoon (criminals, disbelievers in Allaah, polytheists, sinners, etc.). (Hud, ayah 116)

The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: Islaam began as strange, and it will return strange as it began. So glad tidings to the strangers. [Saheeh Muslim, no. 145]

Shaikh 'Abdul-'Azeez ibn Baaz (rahimahullaah Ta'aala) was asked about the meaning of this hadeeth, and he said:

"It means that Islaam was strange and new for people in the early days of Islaam, in Makkah and Al-Madinah. Not many people knew of it, and fewer still believed in it, and practiced it. After that, it [Islaam] spread, and people entered the fold of Islaam in droves, and it was victorious over all other religions. But later on, during the final times, Islaam will return as strange - only a few people will truly know Islaam, and only a few will correctly apply it, and they are the 'strangers.'

[The Prophet's statement] "glad tidings to the strangers" is further explained in a narration of Muslim and others: Those who are righteous when the people will be corrupt. (Ahmad no. 4/67) And in yet another wording: They are the ones who will make right what people have corrupted of my Sunnah. (At-Tirmithi no. 2630 and Al-Baghawi 1/121) We ask Allaah to make us from them; indeed, He is the best to ask."

Here are wordings of other narrations that explain who the strangers are:

- Those who correct the affairs at a time when people become corrupt. (Al-Albanee, al-Saheehah no. 1273)

- Those who have departed from the tribes. (Ahmad no. 3784, Ibn Majah no. 3988; Tirmidhee quotes that Bukhaaree ruled the hadeeth hasan.)

- A small group of righteous people amongst a large number of evil people; those who disobey them are greater in number than those who obey them. (Ahmad no. 6650; saheeh as per Albanee no. 1619)

Shaykh 'Abdullaah 'Ateeq Al-Harbee (hafidhahullaah Ta'aala) said:
"The Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said in the beginning of the hadeeth, 'Islaam began as strange.' Indeed, Allaah ('Azza wa Jall) sent Muhammad (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) after a break in the sending of the Messengers. So after raising 'Iesa (Jesus) to the heavens, He did not send a Prophet until sending Muhammad (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). The people lived in ignorance and darkness, and were in a state of kufr (disbelief) and shirk (polytheism), except for a few from the People of the Book. So, kufr and tughian (oppression) had encompassed the whole of the earth.

Allaah (Subhanahu wa Ta'aala) intended good for mankind; therefore, He sent the Messenger (Muhammad, salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) in order to take mankind away from the worship of the people and slaves to the worship of Allaah (Jalla wa 'Alla), and in order to take them from the darkness of kufr and shirk to the light of Al-Islaam.

So when the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) was initially sent, and he began to call the people to the worship of Allaah, Islaam at that point was something that was strange. And nobody believed in him apart from one or two men, his wife and a child. So Islaam began as something strange.

Then Allaah ('Azza wa Jall) gave victory to the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), and Islaam was spread upon the earth, and indeed the Qur`an was manifest. And people entered into the religion of Allaah (Jalla wa 'Alla) in droves. And Allaah informed - upon the tongue of the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) - that Islaam shall return to being strange, just as it began. So how would that be when Islaam had already spread upon the earth, its East and its West?

Yes, Islaam did return as strange - even to Muslim lands. And [even] among the Muslims, the true and correct Islaam that the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) was sent with has become something strange.

So, for instance, you'll find the Muslim who says La illaaha il Allaah (which means: none has the right to be worshipped in truth except Allaah) yet seeks refuge in other than Allaah, contradicting the testification of Tawheed. Or you'll see the Muslim who says La illaaha il Allaah and says, "Ya RasulAllaah, give us rain," or "Wali such and such, help me in this affair." And from them are those who believe there is benefit in other than Allaah: that we may call on other than Allaah to benefit us. And from them are those who believe those other than Allaah can harm us - without the Qadr (decree) of Allaah.

And from them, you will find individuals who believe - or will say - they know the Ghayb (Unseen). And from them, you will find individuals who say La illaaha il Allaah, but they distance themselves from the worship of Allaah (Jall wa 'Alla) and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah.

And from them are those who call to the authentic Sunnah, and [their] call is looked at as strange among [their] own people of Al-Islaam.

This is one of the signs of the Prophethood of the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), who informed this would happen, and indeed it has taken place as the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihiwasallam) informed us." [Click here and here for the characteristics of the Strangers.]

Al-Haafidh Ibn Rajab Al-Hanbalee (rahimahullaah) wrote:

"Concerning the statement of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam): Islaam began as something strange and will return to being strange, as it began, Imaam Al-Awzaa'ee (rahimahullaah) said: 'As for this, then it does not mean that Islaam will go away, rather it means that Ahlus-Sunnah will go away, up to the point that there will not remain any from them in a land except one person.'"

What is meant by Ahlus-Sunnah are all the Muslims who strictly follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) in 'aqeedah and manhaj and manner of worship and character. They learn it, act upon it, enforce it, and teach it to others. They consist of the scholars, their students, and those who follow in their footsteps.

Abu Bakr al-Aajurri (rahimahullaah Ta'aala) wrote in his book Sifatul Ghuraba, translated into part of The Journey of The Strangers, regarding the Prophet's statement: and it shall return to being strange ----> "misguided innovations shall increase, and many people will succumb to them; as such those who follow the truth - those who adhere to the Legal Law of Islaam - shall seem like strangers amongst the masses."

Regarding the statement of 'Abdullaah ibn Mas'ood (radiallaahu Ta'aala 'anhu): A time will come in which the believer will be regarded as lower than a slave-girl, Ibn Rajab Al-Hanbali (rahimahullaah Ta'aala) wrote in his book Kashf al-Kubrah Wasfi Haali Ahlil-Ghurabah, translated into part of The Journey of The Strangers:

"The believer is humiliated and degraded in the last days because of him being a stranger amongst the corrupt, those who have succumbed to their doubts and desires. All of them hate him and persecute him because of his opposing their path and objectives, and because of his keeping aloof from their practices."

Shaykh 'Abdullaah 'Ateeq Al-Harbee (hafidhahullaah) said concerning the reward of the strangers, concerning the Prophet's statement Tooba (glad tidings) for the Strangers:

"Tooba is either a tree in Jannah or it is the whole of Jannah, Al-Jannah, the expanse of which is as the expanse of the heavens and the earth. As Allaah (Subhanahu wa Ta'aala) has said:

مَثَلُ الْجَنَّةِ الَّتِي وُعِدَ الْمُتَّقُونَ فِيهَا أَنْهَار مِنْ مَاءٍ غَيْرِ آسِن وَأَنْهَار مِنْ لَبَن لَمْ يَتَغَيَّرْ طَعْمُه وَأَنْهَار مِنْ خَمْر لَذَّة لِلشَّارِبِينَ وَأَنْهَار مِنْ عَسَل مُصَفّى وَلَهُمْ فِيهَا مِنْ كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ وَمَغْفِرَة مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ

The description of Paradise which the Muttaqoon (pious) have been promised is that in it are rivers of water, the taste and smell of which are not changed; rivers of milk of which the taste never changes; rivers of wine delicious to those who drink; and rivers of clarified honey (clear and pure) therein for them is every kind of fruit; and forgiveness from their Lord... (Muhammad, ayah 15)

And in a hadeeth Qudsi, Allaah (subhanahu wa ta'aala) said (what means): I have prepared for My righteous slaves what no eye has ever seen, nor an ear has ever heard, and that which has never occurred in a human heart."

Gems from the book The Journey of The Strangers

And here are some highly beneficial excerpts from the book The Journey of The Strangers, which has explanations from Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali and Abu Bakr al-Ajurri (rahimahumullaah Ta'aala) and also includes some tremendous benefits in the Appendix by Imam Ibnul-Qayyim (rahimahullaah), quoted from his Madaarijus-Saalikeen. Here are some gems from that appendix:

"It is because of their paucity in number that they are called strangers since most people do not possess their qualities. The Muslims are strangers amongst mankind, the believers are strangers amongst the Muslims, the people of knowledge are strangers amongst the believers, and Ahlus-Sunnah - those who distinguish the Sunnah from innovation, and call to [the Sunnah] - are strangers. Those who call to the Sunnah, bearing with patience the harm they meet from those who oppose them, are the greatest strangers of all. This latter group are truly the people of Allaah, as such their strangeness is not real; rather it is a strangeness relative to the rest of man, those about whom Allaah, Mighty and Majestic, said:

وَإِنْ تُطِعْ أَكْثَرَ مَنْ فِي الأَرْضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

And if you obey most of those on earth, they will mislead you far away from Allaah's Path... (Al-An'aam, ayah 116) These people, the majority, are in reality the strangers. They are isolated from Allaah, His Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), and His Religion..."

"From the qualities of these strangers is that they would stick firmly to the Sunnah even when people turn away from it, and they would abandon all innovations, even if that innovation be widespread. They purify their Tawheed even if the majority of people censure them for this. They leave ascription to anyone save Allaah and His Messenger, be it a shaykh, or a Tariqah, or a school of thought, or a group; instead they are devoted exclusively to the worship of Allaah alone, and following the Sunnah of His Messenger alone. These people are truly holding onto red hot coals; most people - indeed all of them - censure them, think them to be odd, to be on innovation, and having split away from the 'largest group.'

The meaning of his (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) saying: Those who have departed from the tribes is that Allaah, Subhana, sent Messengers at a time when the people were following many different religions. They were worshipping idols, fire, pictures and the cross; there was the Jew, the Sabian and the philosopher. When Islaam first appeared, it was seen as something strange, and those who accepted Islaam and answered the call of Allaah and His Messenger were seen to be strange among their fellow tribe members and family members. Those who accepted the call to Islaam departed from the tribes, they became strangers in their own tribes and families. This state continued until Islaam became ascendant and people began to accept it in droves, after which this strangeness vanished. However, after this, the strangeness presented itself once again until it ended in the state which it began.

Indeed, today, true Islaam has become stranger than it was in the first days, this even though its signs and features are widespread! True Islaam has become very strange and those who follow it are seen to be the strangest of people!

How is it possible that one sect, few in number, not be strange amongst seventy-two sects, sects that enjoy great following, worldy authority, and leadership, sects that only attained this position and following by opposing what the Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) came with! Indeed, what the Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) came with opposes their desires, their temporal delights, their innovations, which they presume to be the best of deeds, and their lusts which dictate their goals and objectives.

How is it possible that the believer, journeying to Allaah upon the path of following and adherence not be a stranger amongst these people who are merely following their desires, who have succumbed to parsimony, and are amazed at their own opinion...

Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi recorded* on the authority of Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani who said that he asked the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) concerning the verse:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا عَلَيْكُمْ أَنفُسَكُمْ لاَ يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ

O believers! You are only responsible for yourselves. The misguided cannot harm you as long as you are guided... (Al-Ma`idah, ayah 105)

He (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: Rather, Command the good and prohibit the evil until you see parsimony being obeyed, desires being followed, the world being preferred, and every person being amazed at his own opinion; at the time that you see affairs that you cannot change, concern yourself with yourself, and avoid the masses. Those will be the days of patience, and to be patient amongst them will be like holding onto red hot coals. The one who does deeds in those days will have the reward of fifty people doing the same deeds as him. I asked, "Messenger of Allaah, do you mean fifthy of them?" He replied: No, fifty of you.

This great reward is only realized because of one's strangeness and his holding firm to the Sunnah while surrounded by the darkness of desires and the opinions of others.

So if the believer whom Allaah has nourished with insight into His religion, understanding of the Sunnah of His Messenger and His Book, and shown him the reality of what people are upon of innovations, desires, misguidance, and deviating from the Straight Path - the path of the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and his companions - if the believer wishes to traverse this Path, let him prepare himself for the abuse of the ignoramus and innovator, the boycott of people and their warning others from him, just as their predecessors amongst the disbelievers did with the Prophet (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). Were this believer to call them to the true path, and censure their way, it will be as if the Day of Resurrection has come upon them, and they will plot and plan agianst him to the utmost of their ability.

He will be a stranger with regards his religion because of the corruption of their religions. He will be a stranger in his following the Sunnah because of their following innovations. He will be a stranger in his beliefs because of their false beliefs. He will be a stranger in his prayer because of their rundown prayers. He will be a stranger in the path he traverses because of their misguidance. He will be a stranger in his ascription because of their ascriptions. And he will be a stranger in the way he deals with them because they deal with people based upon their desires.

In summary, he will be a stranger in his wordly affairs and in his affairs dealing with the Hereafter. He will not find any to support him or aid him amongst the masses of the people; he will be a scholar amongst the ignorant, a follower of the Sunnah amongst innovators, a caller to Allaah and His Messenger amongst callers to desires and innovations, and commanding good and prohibiting evil amongst people in whose eyes good has become bad and vice-versa.

* Ibid; a similar hadeeth that preceded was declared weak by Albanee, without the additions this one has: Tha'labah al-Khushani asking the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) concerning the verse from Sooratul Ma`idah; and without the authentic ending: The one who does deeds in those days will have the reward of fifty people doing the same deeds as him. Imam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) to Ahlus-Sunnah from his an-Nooniyah

Student of knowledge Hassan as-Somali (hafidhahullaah Ta'aala), using the explanation of Shaikh al-'Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah), relayed the highly beneficial advice of Imam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) to Ahlus-Sunnah from his an-Nooniyah about this very matter of strangeness. What follows are some excerpts:

Regarding Ibnul-Qayyim's statement: "Do not allow the strangeness that you sense amongst the people to cause you to lose heart." ------> Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaimeen, rahimahullaah Ta'aala, said: this means, "If the people go astray, and you are upon guidance, do not feel lonely, do not be sad, do not lose heart. Because the nature of man is that if he does not see people accompanying him in a particular way, or upon a particular path, then he will feel lonely and he may stop in his tracks or he may return and recant from that which he's upon of guidance.

And that is why we find the Prophet (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) in an authentic hadeeth told us about those days when a person will need patience to remain upon the truth; he will receive the reward of 50 of the companions. There will be a time when patience will be required and, due to the amount of patience that is required to remain firm upon the truth, the individual at that time will receive the reward of 50 of the companions of the Prophet Muhammed (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam).

Why? Why will he receive this reward?

Because if a person was to look around him and he found that all of his friends and the people surrounding him were upon the same path, he would not feel lonely. He would not feel lonely. However, for these days you will need patience. All of the people will be differing and disagreeing and contradicting one another. This one saying, 'I'm upon the truth,' another individual saying, 'I'm upon the truth, he's upon falsehood.' So at that time, the believer is going to need to be patient upon the truth.

During that time, it will be difficult for a person to do acts of obedience, and it will be hard, but the individual who will receive this reward - that the Prophet (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) highlighted in the hadeeth - he will be patient in the face of all those trials and difficulties, and his feet will be firm. His feet will be firm."

So Ibn Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said: "Do not allow the sense of strangeness you feel amongst the people cause you to feel lonely." Ibn 'Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said, "Wallaahi (by Allaah), this is the truth."

Brothers, Ahlus-Sunnah should not be disheartened. Ahlus-Sunnah should not lose heart. Ahlus-Sunnah should not feel lonely. As long as you're upon guidance from Allaah, why do you feel lonely? The person upon the Sunnah does not feel lonely. You're upon the correct religion. You're upon the truth. Don't worry about the people. As the 'ulamaa of the past used to say: 'Pleasing the people is something that you will never be able to achieve.' Because you will always have those who are pleased with you and those who are upset with you. The most crucial thing is that you remain firm upon the truth - upon the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) with the understanding of the Sahabah.

Ibn Uthaymeen said, "You will be buried in your grave alone. No one to aide you and assist you. And the people will be buried in their graves alone. And on the Day of Resurrection, you will be brought back to life without any wealth and any offspring or children."

Brothers, Ahlus-Sunnah should not feel lonely. Why should they not feel lonely? Because if you obey Allaah and you obey the Prophet (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), Allaah 'Azza wa Jall gives glad tidings in the Qur`aan that should remove that sense of loneliness and sadness and grief from the heart of any person who clings to the Sunnah of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, said:

وَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ فَأُوْلَائِكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ وَحَسُنَ أُوْلَائِكَ رَفِيقا

And whoso obeys Allah and the Messenger (Muhammad), then they will be in the company of those on whom Allaah has bestowed His Grace, of the Prophets, the Siddiqoon (those followers of the Prophets who were first and foremost to believe in them, like Abu Bakr As-Siddiq), the martyrs, and the righteous. And how excellent these companions are! (An-Nisa, ayah 69)...

And then Imam Ibnul-Qayyim said: "Are you not aware that Ahlus-Sunnah during every era, then they are truly the strangers." And the Shaykh Ibn Uthaimeen said: "The answer to this is: Na'am, certainly we're aware of this. Wallaahi, Ahlus-Sunnah are the strangers."

When the reader was reading this poem (an-Nooniyyah) to Shaikh Ibn Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah), Ibn Uthaymeen said: "May Allaah make us from Ahlus-Sunnah." So the Shaikh said, "The people of the Sunnah are the strangers. The people who cling to the religion, they don't water it down, they don't go to extremes, they're upon the middle path, they are the strangers no matter what time they live in."

The Shaikh said: "If you were to study history, if you were to study the history, Islaamic history, you would find that Ahlus-Sunnah were the strangers, regardless of what time they lived in. ... the difference of opinions, the disputes, the different beliefs, the different religions and sects, you would find that the person of the Sunnah is like the white dot upon the horse's head." The person of the Sunnah is like the white dot upon the horse's head -----> meaning he's small in number.

Keep In Mind The Following Advices From The Salaf

'Abdullaah ibn Mas'ood (radiallaahu 'anhu) said: "One should get used to the idea that if everyone on Earth disbelieved, you would not disbelieve. Do not be an im'ah (characterless)." He was asked, "And what is an im'ah?" He replied, "A person who says, 'I am with the people (I do what they do).' Verily, there is to be no following examples in evil." Prohibition of Sitting with, Listening to, Reading material of People of Innovation

Allaah, Subhanahu wa Ta'aala, commanded (what means): And when you (Muhammad) see those who engage in a false conversation about Our Verses (of the Qur'an) by mocking at them, stay away from them till they turn to another topic. And if Shaitan (Satan) causes you to forget, then after the remembrance sit not you in the company of those people who are the Dhaalimoon (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.). (Al-An'aam, ayah 68)

And it has already been revealed to you in the Book (this Qur'an) that when you hear the Verses of Allaah being denied and mocked at, then sit not with them, until they engage in a talk other than that; (but if you stayed with them) certainly in that case you would be like them. Surely, Allaah will collect the hypocrites and disbelievers all together in Hell (An-Nisa, ayah 140)

Abu Hurairah (radiallaahu anhu) said, the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: A person is upon the deen of his friend, so let each one of you look at whom he befriends. [Saheeh. Refer to Silsilah as-Saheehah of al-Albaani (no.927)]

Ibn Mas'ood (radiallaahu 'anhu) said, "Indeed a person walks alongside and accompanies the one whom he loves and who is like him." Al-Ibaanah (2/476)

Abu ad-Dardaa (radiallaahu 'anhu) said, "It is from the fiqh (understanding of a person) that he [chooses] those whom he walks with, whom he enters upon (visits) and whom he sits with." Al-Ibaanah (2/477)

The scholars have reminded us not to risk what Allaah has gifted us.

From a manhaj class some years ago, we learned that Imam At-Tabari (rahimahullaah) said these above ayat refer to people engaged in their batil (falsehood), whether it be shirk, bid'ah or sin.

Also, Yahyaa bin Sa'eed al-Qattaan (rahimahullaah) said: "When Sufyaan ath-Thawree came to Basrah, he began to look into the affair of ar-Rabee' bin Subaih and the people's estimation of him. He asked them, 'What is his madhhab?,' and they said, 'His madhhab is but the Sunnah.' He then asked, 'Who is his companionship?' And they replied, 'The people of Qadr.' So he replied, 'In that case he is a Qadari.'" [Al-Ibaanah (2/453)]

After quoting this above athar, Ibn Battah (rahimahullaah) said: "Allaah's mercy be upon Sufyaan ath-Thawree. He has indeed spoken with wisdom, and he spoke the truth. He spoke with knowledge that is in agreement with the Book and the Sunnah and what is necessitated by wisdom and what the people of sure insight know. Allaah, the Exalted, said (what means):

O you who believe! Take not as (your) Bitaanah (advisors, consultants, protectors, helpers, friends, etc.) those other than you (outside your religion or upon other than the right way) since they will not fail to do their best to corrupt you. They desire to harm you severely." (Aali Imraan, ayah 118)"

And beware of their tricks. From the same manhaj class, we learned that Mufaddal ibn Mahallal (rahimahullaah) warned: "If the companion of the bid'ah were to speak to you about his bid'ah at the beginning of sitting with him, then you would have kept away from him and left. But he will speak to you at the beginning with the Sunnah, then he will put in you his bid'ah and your heart accepts it, so when will it leave your heart?" [Kitab ut-Tafsir, no. 3004]

Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahimahullaah) said: "So safety - if Allaah has willed - is in abandoning sitting with them to discuss their innovation and misguidance." [Related by Ibn Battah in Al-Ibaanah]

Ibn Battah said: "So fear Allaah, O Muslims! The good opinion you have of yourself and the knowledge you have that you are on the correct way, should not lead you to risk your Deen by sitting down with some of these people of desires, thinking, 'I will intrude upon them in order to debate with them or to expose their ideas.' However, they are more severe form of Fitnah than the Dajjal, and their speech clings to a person more strongly than a severe itch, and can burn the hearts more than a blazing flame can. And I have seen a group of people who used to curse and revile the People of Desires. Then they went and sat with them in order to contest with them and refute them. Then the cheerful, open attitude, the hidden deception and the subtle disbelief continued until they became inclined towards them." [Al-Ibaanah (2/470)]

Also comes this narration. Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Qaasim related to us, saying: Ahmad ibn al-Hasan narrated to us saying: Sulaymaan ibn al-Ash'ath narrated to us, saying: 'Abdullaah ibn Chubbi al-Anteeq narrated to us, saying: Yaws ibn Asbaat narrated to us, saying: I heard Muhammad ibn an-Nadr al-Haarithee say: Whoever listens to a person of innovation - and knows that he is a person of innovation - then protection is taken away from him, and he is left to himself. [al-Imaam al-Haafiz Abul-Qaasim Habatullaah ibn al-Hasan ibn Mansoor at-Tabaree al-Laalikaa' ee (d.418 A.H.) reports in his "Sharh Usool I'tiqaad Ahlis-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah" - Volume 1 Pages 135-136 No. 252]

So we should NOT sit with those who oppose or belittle or mock tawheed, or those who oppose and supress the Sunnah, or those who enjoin the evil and forbid the good, or those who say "Allaah [in His Self] is everywhere" or those who allow making du'aa to the Prophet or 'Ali or a Waly, or those who encourage to speak ill/rebel against the rulers, or worship graves, or say the "Qur'an is created" or the "Qur'an is incomplete", or those who reply to evidence from the Qur`an and Sunnah (upon the correct understanding) with doubts and statements such as "yeah, but" or "my opinion is", etc... [we seek refuge in Allaah from these destructive statements and beliefs].

Allaah, Ta'aala, said (what means): And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allaah, so call on Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impious speech against) His Names. They will be requited for what they used to do. (Al-A'raf, ayah 180)

Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan (hafidhahullaah) - in his sharh of Lum'at il I'tiqaad -  quoted the following statement of Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al 'Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) from the latter's sharh (explanation) of the same work: "So from abandoning the people of innovations is: abandoning looking into their books, fearing (that he will be put to) trial by them or circulating them (the books) amongst the people.

So staying far from the places of misguidance is obligatory, as per his - salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam - saying about the Dajjaal: Whoever hears of him, then let him stay far away from him, for by Allaah a man will surely go to him thinking that himself to be a believer but will then follow those false doubts with which he (the Dajjaal) was sent. [Hadeeth reported by Aboo Daawud (4319). And al-Albaanee said: Its chain of narration is saheeh (authentic).]

However if the intent behind looking into their books is to gain knowledge of their innovations in order to refute them, then there is no problem with this - for the person who has that from the correct 'aqeedah which will protect him and who has the ability to refute them. Rather it may be something obligatory because refuting the innovation is obligatory. And that which is necessary for the completion of an obligatory matter is itself obligatory." (Ta'leeq mukhtasar 'alaa kitaab Lum'at il I'tiqaad, pgs. 85-86)"

Explaining the last part of Shaikh al-'Uthaimeen's statement, Shaikh Saalih al-Fawzaan said: "As for the person who is mutamakkin (proficient) and well grounded in knowledge, then he may examine the books of the innovators in order to refute them and to warn the people against what is in these books."

If Scholars can be affected, then what about us?

While reading from the work of Shaikh Muhammad Bazmool (hafidhahullaah), student of knowledge Moosaa Richardson came across an important benefit regarding the books of the people of innovation. On the heels of mentioning the Mu'tazila and their deviant beliefs, Shaikh Bazmool warned against a dangerously influential, widely-circulated book of tafseer called al-Kashaaf by Zamakhsharee - an adherent to the Mu'tazili 'aqidah. Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) used to warn against this book, telling people to stay away from this deviant book.

Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said: "Some of these authors of these tafseers from the Mu'tazila - from whose 'aqidah is to put the 'aql (intellect) above the naql (the text from the Qur`an and Sunnah) - they take their intellect as a source greater than the source of the Deen (the text of the Deen; revelation from Allaah). This tafseer of Mu'tazila called al-Kashaaf is powerful in its expressions, strong in language, but at the same time he [Zamakhsharee] has taken great care to put innovations between the lines, or in the words. So much so that he has spread falsehood to people who did not intend to take any falsehood from him, as much as Allaah ('aaza wa jall) willed."

Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) added: "I've seen in the writings of scholars - scholars in general and scholars of tafseer and other than them [Ibn Taymiyyah is referring to scholars here!] -  who have been affected by the words of Zamakhsharee in his tafseer and have unintentionally ended up agreeing to a principle of falsehood while in general being against that kind of principle, and being someone who would never take that kind of a principle as a form of guidance. But not being aware of every little [deviant] thing that Zumakhsaree put in his tafseer, they put their guard down and some innovation crept into their statements because of that."

That's very important because of the many people today who say, there is no harm in reading the books of the people of innovation so long as you stay away from the bad.

Now think about what Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said here about scholars of tafseer, and the books that are in our library are a witness to this. Books that are from Ahlus-Sunnah [of tafseer] that have been affected by the likes of Zamakhsharee. They convey the words of Zamakhsharee that have hidden meanings in them and support for falsehood without even knowing it. We are witnesses to the truthfulness of Shaykhul-Islaam's clarification here.

The author Shaikh Muhammad Bazmool said here in a footnote: "Allaahu akbar! [Ibn Taymiyyah's] talking about the 'ulemma and the scholars of tafseer. And [they] convey or quote words of falsehood, not knowing that the words were words of falsehood. Then what about students of knowledge, beginners, and being easy and letting their guards down with the likes of these kinds of books? He said, "I saw scholars and 'ulemma of tafseer and other than them quoting [falsehood] from these books without knowing. So how is it that a scholar who knows about i'tizaal, knows about the bid'ah of Zamakhsharee, would go read his book and then quote words that would support the very foundation of i'tizaal without knowing it?

Inna minal bayaani la sihraa (There are some kinds of speech that are magic), because of a powerful expression, because of a precise explanation of an issue. The person says that's a great explanation, something profound; I want to put that quote into my book. So then what about the people who don't reach the level of the 'ulemma, people like ourselves, people who try to study and try to learn, but they are nowhere near the rank of the 'ulemma?"

A Reminder of The Great Harm 'Awlaki Caused

With the death of Anwar al-'Awlaki, it is important to remind his followers - including those in America and Canada - that the 'aqeedah (creed) and manhaj (methodology) that al-'Awlaki stubbornly upheld and called to was baatil (false), in clear opposition to that of Prophet Muhammad (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). Following what 'Awlaki called to leads to the fire, whereas following Prophet Muhammad (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) leads to Paradise.

Prophet Muhammad - the seal of all the Prophets - called to singling out Allaah with all worship, making the religion sincerely and purely for Allaah, and to worship Allaah alone based on what Allaah legislated and is pleased with, to obey the Muslim rulers, to avoid and forbid shirk and bid'ah and sins, and to be united upon the truth and not divide.

The blood-thirsty 'Awlaki made mass takfeer of Muslims, rallied people against Muslim rulers and against the country of Tawheed (Sa'udia), encouraged suicide-bombing operations which he deceptionally named "martyrdom operations," praised terroristic attacks such as the one in Fort Hood, Texas (declaring those who refuted this action to be 'hypocrites'), distorted texts, slandered the righteous scholars of the Sunnah, and even used stories as daleel (evidence) in calling to the hellfire anyone who would listen, from those in Somalia to those in California, USA.

Allaah said (what means): Indeed in the Messenger of Allaah (Muhammad) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allaah and the Last Day, and remembers Allaah much. (Al-Ahzab, ayah 21) Student of knowledge Mustafa George relayed that Imam As-Sa'dee (rahimahullaah) said concerning this ayah: "So the best example is in the Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). So the one who abides by the Sunnah of the Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam), then he has tread the path that will take him to the pleasure and reward of Allaah. And verily, this is the Straight Path.
But whoever takes an example from other than the Messenger - in opposition to him (the Messenger, salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) - then this is an evil example...
So this good example is only tread by a person who has been given the success, and by the person who hopes in (wants to meet) Allaah and The Last Day. And that which pushes him to tread this path is his belief in Allaah, his fear of Allaah and his desire to obtain the pleasure and reward of Allaah, and his fear from the punishment of Allaah. Scholars such as Shaikh 'Ubaid al-Jabiree, Muhammad al-'Aqeel, and 'Abdullaah al-Jarboo (hafidhahumullaah) have refuted 'Awlaki and his errors, and students such as Abu Hakeem Bilal Davis (England) and Abul Hasan Maalik (Camden, N.J.) have clarified 'Awlaki's errors, warning the Muslims not to be deceived by Awlaki's deceptional eloquence.

Those of you who live out West may have sadly noticed the blind-following that 'Awlaki has, especially among the youth who attend Al-Maghrib Institute and ICNA and ISNA, organizations which are thinly-veiled screens for the support of Kharijee off-shoot sects such as Ikhwanul Muslimeen and Qutbiyah and Hizb-ut-Tahreer and Al-Qa`eda and Surooriyah. Deviant teachers at Al-Maghrib-type organizations support 'Awlaki, whose CDs are handed to the youth, who absorb the content therein, unaware of its deviance:

1- The content in the CDs is in opposition to what Allaah revealed to His final Messenger (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam).

2- Furthermore, the content in the CDs is a call to the deviance of the Khawaarij, whom the Messenger of Allaah warned against in many, many ahadeeth.

3- These CDs shouldn't even be heard except by a scholar or a student grounded in knowledge whose intent is to refute this man's deviance for the protection of the Ummah from his doubts [For more on this serious matter, click here]

With this mind, here are some of the statements from the scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah regarding 'Awlaki, the Kharijee:

Shaikh 'Ubaid al-Jabiree (hafidhahullaah) said about Awlaki: "The first affair is his ignorance concerning the fiqh (understanding) of Jihaad, and he has no knowledge concerning the Jihaad which is from the well-planned obligations that Allaah has established up until Allaah causes the earth and whosoever is upon it to perish. And I suspect that the man has become polluted by the ideas of Sayyid Qutb, al Misree (the Egyptian). And similiar to him are Abu Qatada and Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisee and many others besides them. So all of these individuals and this man have been influenced by the likes of Sayyid Qutb. According to the people of research and experience with examining statements, Sayyid Qutb is the flag-bearer of takfeer in this time. And his book Ma'aalim fi Tareek (translated as "Milestones") proves this clearly. So this Sayyid [Qutb] has declared the entire Ummah kufaar, falsely. The rulers and their subjects.

The second affair that has become apparent from the first two statements is that the man [al-'Awlaki] harbors resentment against the Arabian Peninsula, and he harbors resentment against the rulers from Aalee Sa'ud. And due to this, he has described them with kufr (disbelief) or nifaq (hypocrisy), or both of them. And the crime of Aalee Sa'ud - according to this one ['Awlaki] and his likes from the people of desires and splitting and the Khawarij - is that their nation state [Saudia Arabia] is a nation state of Tawheed and the Sunnah. Every person of the Sunnah testifies to this, and their nation state has been the flag bearer of Tawheed and the Sunnah since its inception at the hands of Al-Imaam Muhammad ibn Sa'ud (rahimahullaah), since it gives victory to Tawheed and the Sunnah...

"So it is not strange that al-'Awlaki should take this path since he has a predecessor [Qutb] and he himself is from the later followers. And from here, I warn the Muslims firstly against this man [al-'Awlaki] and I call upon them to boycott him and to sever ties with him and to refute him with a knowledge-based refutation that will expose his da'wah and reveal his true condition, and show that he is an enemy to the people of Islam and the Sunnah. And this refutation must show that he [al-'Awlaki] and his likes are from those who have disfigured the image of Islam and the image of the people of Islam to the extent that they have driven those who do not possess intellect from the Jews and the Christians to attack the personality of the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and they have degraded the mushaf. Due to their lack of intellect and their lack of knowledge of Islam and its people, they think that Anwar al-'Awlaki and his predecessors and his contemporaries represent the people of Islam and they think that this path of theirs is the true path of the people of Islam..."

Shaikh Al-Jarboo (hafidhahullaah) said: "From what I heard of his [al 'Awlaki's] background, his 'shaykhs,' and his ideas in general, it is clear that this individual is affiliated with Ikhwanul Muslimoon [deviant sect which named themselves 'Muslim Brotherhood'], especially one of their branches called 'Surooriyyah.' Ikhwanul Muslimoon has a distinct orientation, and their concerns revolve around certain contemporary issues in which they oppose those firmly rooted in knowledge. They oppose the scholars in their speech and verdicts. Therefore, if this man builds his orientation upon this thinking and ideology of those groups affiliated with and derived from the likes of the Islaamic Group of Pakistan at whose head al-Mawdudi - such as Ikhwanul Muslimeen of Egypt, and Hamaas of Palestine - then know that all these groups have a specific ideology for themselves. Thus, the awareness of this man's background, his ideological affliliation is very important in knowing his orientation, and making a ruling concerning him and his statements.

As far as the issue of suicide bombings, they call them 'martyrdom operations' - and the scholars have labeled them as suicide. Then these acts are most of what the opposers, endorsers of takfeer (those who expel Muslims from the fold of al-Islam without right) from the 'Muslim Brotherhood' sect, promote on the internet, in their writings, books, CDs, and lectures. They authorize these acts of violence for which they attempt to assemble proofs to validate them. These proofs and evidences that they seek to substantiate their position by have already been declared by the people of knowledge as 'invalid' for their use as evidence in the supporting of these acts. The most important premise in their process of presenting the legitimacy of their stance is their use of al-Qiyas (analogy or comparative deduction)."

Jarboo not only warned of 'Awlaki's deviance, but exposed 'Awlaki's ignorance and deviant erroneous explanation regarding the texts that 'Awlaki distorted, deceiving thereby ignoramuses to blow themselves up.

Shaikh Muhammad al-'Aqeel (hafidhahullaah) said about 'Awlaki:

"The one who spoke these words is misguided and upon the path of the Khawaarij, those who attack the Muslim leaders. It is obligatory upon the Muslims to be cautious of him ['Awlaki] and warn against his ideology. The virtue of this blessed country and the effort of its rulers to act upon the Book and the Sunnah to the best of their ability is well-known by every person who has sound intellect and is just. No one rejects this except a misguided liar."

Student of knowledge Sa'eed Rhana al-Maghribee (hafidhahullaah) said about 'Awlaki: "He gives listeners doubts in their religion, and does not call to Da'wah Salafiyyah; rather he calls to praise the people of Desire and has great mistakes in his manhaj such as allowing suicide bombings. He also quotes from the people of bid'ah (innovation) in his lectures and CDs, such as Sayyid Qutb, Salman 'Awdah and Mawdudi." Sa'eed al-Maghribee also emphasized here in this audio that al-'Awlaki does not represent Islaam.

During a conference in Camden, N.J. a few years ago, one of the students mentioned that al-'Awlaki admitted to reading the deviant Sayyid Qutb's Fi Thilalil-Quran while in prison, and favoring it over the Tafseer of Al-Haafidh Ibn Katheer (rahimahullaah). Wallaahu musta'aan (And Allaah's Help is sought!).

This is merely a sampling of the harm that 'Awlaki caused the Muslims and the perception of Islaam, especially in the West. It is important that those whom 'Awlaki poisoned are educated and shown in a clear manner - with proofs - that the path 'Awlaki called to is in direct opposition to the legislated path of Prophet Muhammad (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). And it is upon those who have been poisoned by 'Awlaki to be sincere, and truthful in choosing revelation above their desires, opinions and emotions.

Allaah said (what means): Is he who is on a clear proof from his Lord, like those for whom their evil deeds that they do are beautified for them, while they follow their own lusts (evil desires)? (Muhammad, ayah 14)

From The Fundamentals of the Salafee Methodology

Shaikh Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaanee (d.1420H, rahimahullaah) said in his highly beneficial book Fundamentals of the Salafee Methodology: "So it is obligatory for the one who wishes to be from amongst the Saved Sect, that he must act in accordance to what these Companions and taabi'een were upon. And they were the Salafus-Saalih, whom we must take as an example."[25] [Below are beneficial footnotes regarding this point]

[25] Taking the Salaf as our example involves a number of issues:

1. Firstly, correctness in this life and salvation in the Hereafter will occur through following the guidance of the Salaf.

2. Secondly, it is obligatory that the ascription to Salafiyyah must be real, by sound following of the madh-hab of the Salaf and their guidance. And one must not leave their understanding for the understanding of anyone else.

3. Thirdly, from the results of sticking to the guidance of the Salafus-Saalih and employing their understanding of the texts is the absence of differing from them in statements and positions, and not leaving their ijtihaad for a new ijtihaad that has no precedence. Imam Ahmad (d.241H) - rahimahullaah - said to his student Abul-Hasan al-Maymoonee, "Do not speak about an issue in which you do not have an Imaam." Refer to Manaaqib Ahmad (p. 178) of Ibnul-Jawzee.

And Imam Ahmad said, "One will not come across anything except that there is a position established concerning it from the companions of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam)." Refer to Masaa`il Ahmad (p. 277) of Abee Daawood as-Sijjistaanee.

4. Fourthly, from the results of sticking to the guidance of the Salafus-Saalih is taking whatever agrees with the proof from their ijtihaad along with excusing them with good mention whenever they oppose the text in their ijtihaad. Said 'Umar Ibnul-Khattab (radiallaahu 'anhu), "There are three that destroy the Religion: [i] the mistake of a Scholar; [ii] the argument of a hypocrite with the Qur`aan; [iii] and misguided Imams." Saheeh: Related by Ibn 'Abdul-Barr in Jaami' Bayaanul-'Ilm wa Fadlihi (2/110).

Stated Imaam al-Awzaa'ee (d.157H) - rahimahullaah: "Whosoever takes the statement of the people of Makkah regarding mut'ah (temporary marriage), the statement of the people of al-Koofah regarding wine, the statement of the people of Madeenah regarding singing, and the statement of the people of Shaam regarding the infallibility of the Caliphs, then he has gathered together all evil." Refer to Siyar A'laamin-Nubalaa (8/81) of al-Haafidh adh-Dhahabee.

5. Fifthly, from the results of sticking to the guidance of the Salaf is discarding deadly Khalafiyyah which is founded upon giving precedence to the intellect over the text and rejecting the Book and the Sunnah through corrupt ta`weelat (figurative interpretations). Indeed, Al-Awazaa'ee said, "Stick to the athaar of those who preceded, even if the people reject you." Saheeh: Related by al-Aajurree in ash-Sharee'ah (p. 58) and al-Khateeb in Sharaf Ashaabul-Hadeeth (no. 6).

"I mentioned to the Shaykh that Shaykh Falaah bin Ismaa'eel (may Allaah preserve him) warned some brothers to keep away from Masjid Rahmah and not to attend their classes until they rectify their affairs. Shaykh Shehaab added that this is the position of Shaykh Hasan al-Bannaa as well as himself, and it is that they will not deal with Masjid Rahmah until they rectify their affairs with Shaykh Rabee'. Shaykh Shehaab mentioned that they were requested to come to Masjid Rahmah, but they refused to come until they rectify their affairs."

"Shaykh Hasan mentioned that Abu Laylah in his statements is from amongst those who explain the Qur'aan and Hadeeth according to his desires."

"Shaykh Hasan stated: 'Indeed their image is tainted based upon their actions.' Shaykh Shehaab mentioned that, 'Their image will be tainted as long as they're doing what they're doing. However if they repent and rectify their affairs then their image will not be tainted.'"

"The Shaykh advised the brothers to remain strong and firm. The Shaykh advised us to keep away from Masjid Rahmah and not cooperate with them until they rectify their affair with Shaykh Rabee' and rectify that which they corrupted amongst the people."

In the Name of Allaah…

Scenario:

A student actively attends an important lesson regularly, takes notes, and tries not to miss anything. He gets there early to get a good seat to make sure he can hear clearly. If someone asks him something in the lesson, he merely gestures for him to ask later. His phone is always on silent, he pays no attention to it during the lesson. Whatever people want from him, he will attend to it after the lesson. He is focused on the lesson entirely. He asks follow-up questions.

Another Scenario:

A student attends the same important lesson regularly, but he does not take notes. He does not get there early, and so he sits in the back. If someone asks him something in the lesson, he responds and helps. He points out the direction of the bathroom… he may even explain who the shaykh is to a new student. His phone is active, he occasionally answers calls or reads and responds to text messages. Since he misses much of the content of the lesson, he does not ask follow-up questions.

If years go by and the student continues upon the path mentioned in the first scenario, then we have the makings of a serious student, maybe even a scholar eventually, and Allaah is the One who grants success.

If years go by and the student continues upon the path mentioned in the second scenario, then we have another brother who “studied”.

Would you believe that the two scenarios are describing the same student?

Its a common before-and-after case for a student who bought or was given an audio recording device.

It is common that when the recorder is used, the student relaxes, he doesn’t take notes, its “all there in the recording”, I’ll review it later, I’ll take notes when I listen to it, I’ll even transcribe it later… And the Shaytaan has slipped in, in the most deceptive of ways, and taken him far away from what will benefit him, by getting him to rely on that recorder. In the end, he’s got loads of recordings that are way too many for him to begin to review, and under the pressure of a university system, he has no time to go back and study them, until perhaps his studies are over. Then, he listens to them, but now he’s like everyone else in the West, listening to audio recordings, he’s not a student of knowledge in a study circle with the scholars. He had the chance to be one, but he let it slip away.

While the technology we have been blessed with can serve our religious goals in many ways, this is a very subtle point that needs to be highlighted regarding the use of audio recordings at Islaamic lessons. This applies more directly to students of knowledge in the Muslim lands studying under the scholars.

Advice: Don’t use a recording device. Sit at the feet of your shaykh, and watch his lips! Try not to miss a word. Don’t miss a class. Phone is on silent or off. Pen in hand. Book or text on your lap. Material previewed before the lesson. Your notes reviewed with a good student after the lesson. There is no safety net! You must get that knowledge at that sitting, or you will miss it! This approach is many times more effective than attending to record the lecture.

If you feel you have that safety net, you will very likely let your guard down and become lazy at the lesson, to one degree or another, so beware of the subtle tricks of your sworn enemy!

Who would have thought that Shaytaan could use a voice recorder at a scholar’s lesson against you?!

Shaykh Ahmad an-Najmi -Rahimhullah Rahmatin Waseeyah- said about Shaykh Muhammad bin Ramzaan Al-Haajiree:

"He is from the heads of Ahl AlSunnah."

Similarly in the report of Naif Al-Mutairi - one of the Shaykh's students- mentioned:

I narrate to you a conversation of one our brothers who telephoned Sheikh Ubaid Al-Jaabiree -may Allaah protect him- seeking a fatwa about an issue. And the Sheikh (Al-Jabiree) was busy, so he asked our brother, "Where are you from?" He said, "From Al-Jubail." So the Shaykh (Al-Jabiree) said, "With you is Muhammad Ibn Ramzan, so call him and ask him."

Additionally when Sheikh Muhammad Ibn Hadi Al-Madkhalee -may Allaah protect him- visited us in Al-Jubail, I was with the Sheikh in the same car traveling to Dammam in which he praised our Sheikh (Muhammad Ibn Ramzan) and his efforts of da"wah in the Province.
