Acting Sincerely Upon Knowledge

Sincere and Correct

Allaah says (what means): So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord. (Al-Kahf 18:110)

Narrated by 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) saying: "The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions, and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration was for what he emigrated for." [Bukhari]

Narrated by 'A`ishah: The Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "Whosoever does an action not in accordance with our matter (Sunnah), then it will be rejected." [Muslim]

Al-Fudayl ibn 'Iyyad (rahimahullaah) said:

"Allaah 'azza wa jall accepts only those deeds which are both correct and sincere (pure). If the deed is done correctly but not sincerely, it will not be accepted. And if it is sincere but not correct, it will not be accepted." He was asked, "Abu 'Ali! What is the sincere and correct deed?" He replied, "The sincere deed is one that is done only for Allaah 'azza wa jall. And the correct deed is one done according to the Sunnah."

Follow up Knowledge of a Sunnah by acting on it

Taken from the advice of 'Abbaad ibn 'Abbaad al-Khawwaas (rahimahullaah) to Ahlus Sunnah wal-Jamaah (from al-kitaab al-jameel "Min Wasaayaa as-Salaf")

quote:
"And do not content yourselves concerning the Sunnah with striving for speech and not acting upon it. For indeed striving upon the Sunnah without acting upon it is a lie as well as neglecting knowledge."



Abi 'Abdillah Ar-Rowthabaari said,

quote:
"Whoever goes out seeking knowledge - just for the sake of knowledge - will not benefit from that knowledge. And whoever goes out seeking knowledge, wanting action from that knowledge, then he will benefit from even a small portion of knowledge."



A man used to ask questions to Abu Ad-Darda` (radiallaahu 'anhu), so he [Abu Ad-Darda`]said to him, "Everything that you are asking about, do you implement it?" The man replied, "No." So [Abu Ad-Darda`] said to him, "So what will you do with the additional arguement that Allaah has against you?"

'Ataa` narrates that there used to be a young man who used to go to the Mother of the Believers 'A`ishah (radiallaahu 'anha) to ask her questions and she would narrate to him. One day, he came to her to ask her some questions. She said, "Son, have you put into practice what you hear from me yet?" He replied, "No mother, I have not." So she said, "Son, why do you then seek to increase Allah's proof against us and you?!"

Acting Upon Knowledge, by Shaikh Muhammad bin Saleh Al-'Uthaimeen

Question: What is your advice regarding acting upon knowledge?

Answer by Shaikh Al-'Uthaimeen: It is mandatory that a person acts upon his knowledge, because the fruit of knowledge is action. If a person does not act upon his knowledge, he will consequently be from amongst the first people to be punished in the fire on the Day of Judgement. It was mentioned (in lines of poetry):

"The scholar who did not act upon his knowledge will be punished before the worshippers of idols."

Thus, if a person does not act upon his knowledge, this will lead to failure in knowledge, loss of blessing, and forgetfulness of knowledge. This is based on the statement of Allaah:

Due to their breach of their covenant, We cursed them and made their hearts grow hard. They change the words from their places and have abandoned a good part of the Message that was sent to them. (Surah Al Ma`idah: 13)

The abandonment mentioned in the above verse includes:

- A mental abandonment
- A physical (in actions) abandonment

Thus, the meaning is: they abandon the knowledge mentally, or they abandon it physically by not acting upon it. This is because Al Nisyaan in the Arabic language refers to abandonment. But on the other hand, if a person acts upon knowledge, then Allaah will increase him in guidance.

Allaah said: Those who are guided, He (Allaah) increases their guidance. (Surah Muhammad: 17)

He (Allaah) will also grant them Taqwa, as Allaah continues to mention in the verse:

and He grants them Taqwa (Surah Muhammad: 17)

Thus, if a person acts upon his knowledge, Allaah will grant him further knowledge that he did not previously possess. Due to this, some of the Salaf mentioned: "Knowledge searches for action; if it does not find it, it will depart."

Nor is it to just say Na'm Na'm Na'm in the majaalis!
Nor is it to just say Ya'ni Ya'ni, Ya'ni in the majalis!
Nor is it to just look the part with your head covering!
Nor is it to just wrap your legs with your hands or to tie them with a cloth in the majaalis!
Nor is it to just write books!
Nor is it to just read eloquently!
Nor is it to learn for the sake of teaching when one is not themselves prepared to sit and learn!
Nor is it by just lowering your head to show piety!
Nor is it sleeping through the whole night!

But knowledge is fear of Allaah,
knowledge is Ikhlaas and righteous deeds,
knowledge is knowing Allaah is watching you at all times,
Knowledge is checking yourself.
Knowledge is knowing how much you don't know,
knowledge is humility,
knowledge is knowing you are questionable infront of Allaah for what you say and do...
knowledge is giving the people of knowledge their level that Allaah gave them
Knowledge is good manners
Knowledge is learning correct Aqeedah and Methodology
Knowledge is using your time beneficially
Knowledge is getting up for Qiyaamulayl
Knowledge is hoping and loving to meet Allaah
Knowledge is fear of Allaah

That is knowledge that benefits.
