Crucial Reminder:
Allaah will assist His slave as much
as the slave assists his brother
Reading from the work of Ibn Qudamah (D. 689 H, rahimahullaah Ta'aala), Abu 'Abdillaah Hassan as-Somali (hafidhahullah Ta'aala) shared some benefits concerning the rights of your brother upon you. [The following are some notes - not verbatim:]
The Prophet (salallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:
Allaahu fi 'awn il 'Abd ma kanna al-'Abd fi 'awn akhihi
(Allaah will assist His slave as much as the slave assists his brother).
[1]
The
lowest
level of fulfilling the right of your brother is when he asks you to do something, and you have the ability to do it, and you are happy to do it. This is the
lowest
level.
The middle level of fulfilling the right of your brother is when you fulfill the right of your brother
without him asking
.
The highest level of fulfilling the right of your brother is that ----->
you give precedence to the need of your brother over your own need!

And those who, before them, had homes (in Al-Madinah) and had adopted the Faith, love those who emigrate to them, and have no jealousy in their breasts for that which they have been given,
and give them (emigrants) preference over themselves, even though they were in need of that.
And whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, such are they who will be the successful.
(Al-Hashr, ayah 9)
Ibn 'Abbaas (radiallaahu 'anhumma) warned against asking the person if he needs your help (because you would then be asking him to humiliate himself).
Ibn Qudamah (rahimahullaah Ta'aala) said:
Some of the Salaf would take care of the family of the deceased for 40 years!
Then Abu 'Abdillaah Hassan As-Somali mentioned - as a way of encouraging those who are able to implement the above texts - that the family of Abu Uwais (rahimahullaah Ta'aala) should be assisted. [May Allaah bless them in their Deen and Dunya. Ameen!]

Notes:
[1] The wording of the hadeeth in Sahih Muslim narrated by Abu Hurairah (radiallaahu Ta'aala 'anhu) is:
Whoever relieves a believer of an anxiety from the anxieties of life, Allaah will relieve him of an anxiety from the anxieties of the Day of Resurrection. And whoever makes things easy for the
Mus'ir
(the one who is in financial straights and is not able to repay his debt), Allaah will make things easy for him in this life and the next. And Allaah will assist His slave as much as the slave assists his brother.
